This engine doesn't have a long history. The engine was built in 1989 by Tang Shan in China. The engine was brought over on a boat from China to the United States with a twin engine that is at the Knox and Kane . 142 is a SY class engine and weighs in at 100 tons. It has 39,000 pounds of tractive effort plus an additional 600 with a booster. The engine was originally brought to the United States to run on the Valley Railroad in Essex Connecticut. The engine was eventually sold to the Susquehanna Railroad and is used for occasional excursions.
On July 9, 1998 Susquehanna 142 pulled an N.R.H.S. excursion out of Syracuse New York headed toward Binghamton. The engine sounded great and even though there was a set of E8s behind the engine, the steamer did most of the work.
142 was in Utica New York on December 11, 1999. The engine was pulling a special winter excursion on the Adirondack Scenic railroad. This trip marked the first time a steam engine ran on this line in about 50 years, this day was also the last time a steam train would run in New York this century. It was a very cold morning and there was no snow on the ground, but a few miles out of Utica we entered a winter wonderland. The engine sounded and looked even better in the snow, the trip was great.
