Cass Scenic Railroad

our last runby on the Western Maryland line

Railfan Weekend

6 in the big cutI had always heard that Cass railfan weekends were fun. I talked my Dad into going with me and we headed down to Cass for the May 1999 railfan weekend. It was great! We got there on a friday afternoon and wondered around the yard and shop area. This was the first time I ever saw a shay under steam. Saturday was a nice morning, we got our first run-by of the day at Cass, then boarded our train for a trip to Spruce. Just a little while before our first runby out on the line, the rain came. It seemed like the only time it rained was during the photo runbys This didn't deter me at all, trains run in all weather who says you can only take pictures of them with blue skies.

passing the water tower in the morningSunday started with some really cold weather. We had a shay race at Cass, then we boarded our train for Bald Knob. The trip to Bald Knob was great. We stopped for lunch at Spruce and then headed up the line, we had several photo run-by's before we reached the summit. We made it back to Cass in the afternoon and watched the engines being put a way.
