The town of Cass was created in the late 1800's. The sawmill and logging railroad began operations in 1902. Shays continued to carry logs to the mill until the Mower Lumber Company closed down the railroad and mill in July 1960. The railroad was sold to a scrap dealer and was in the process of being scrapped when a railfan stepped in with the idea of saving the railroad for tourist trains. The idea worked and the first Cass Scenic train ran on June 15, 1963. Now the whole railroad and the town of Cass have been designated a State park and are on the National register of Historic Places.
Two train rides are offered at Cass. One goes to the Whittaker station where their are displays showing what logging camps were like and has various types of logging equipment. The other trip takes the same route, but continues on past Whittaker for a long journey up to Bald Knob. Bald Knob is the second highest point in West Virginia. This is also where the end of the line was for logging trains.
