2816 was built in 1930 for the Canadian Pacific. The engine was retired in 1960 and sold to steamtown. The engine remained a static display there. I remember standing (the seats had fallen apart) in the cab of this engine at steamtown and someone telling me this engine would never run again because it was in such bad condition. In 1998 however, the Canadian Pacific reclaimed the engine and returned the engine to service in 2001.
I followed 2816 twice in 2003. I first caught the engine on a trip from Toronto to Hamilton. I didn't actually catch the engine until it was almost in Hamilton, but it was still a fun chase. A week later I chased an excursion from Toronto to Guelph Junction and return. This was the better weather day, but chasing was not much better. I got stuck in traffic in Toronto and that engine was going too fast to catch up with. I caught up after the engine's second stop on the trip just before it was turned at Guelph Junction for the return to Toronto. I thought I could keep up on the return trip, but that engine was just too fast again. It was still a good trip though.
