Steamtown was created by Nelson Blount. He began collecting steam locomotives as they were being scraped to save them for future generations. He opened a tourist railroad in Vermont and began operating some of the steam locomotives in his collection. Eventually the collection needed a bigger home that was closer to a bigger population. Scranton, Pa was determined to be best suited for the collection and everything was moved to Scranton. The National Park Service acquired the collection and created the first national park dedicated to steam railroading. Steamtown now includes a very large museum in the roundhouse, many steam locomotives on display and live steam demonstrations and excursions.
My first visit to steamtown was Memorial weekend 1997. The 0-6-0 switcher and 2-8-2 3254 were running. I rode one of the yard shuttles pulled by the switcher and spent the rest of the day in awe of all the steam locomotive that are at steamtown. I was really impressed with the museum, there is so much at the museum that I knew it would take several visits to see everything.
