The Port Elgin & North Shore Railroad was built in 1973 originally as a 3" scale railroad. The railroad was rebuilt to two foot gauge after the original engine was moved. After the first engine left, the current locomotive was brought in from a theme park that went out of business. The engine was built in Port Elgin in 1978. It has been operating in Port Elgin since 1983. The railroad is located on the waterfront of Port Elgin, Ontario. The line runs along Lake Huron to North Shore park and back.
I visited Port Elgin on August 28, 2004. The hotel I stayed in was directly across the street from the beach and more importantly the train station! They advertise that the sunsets here are beautiful, but as usual clouds and rain follow me everywhere. I honestly thought that it was going to snow that night - in August! Aside from the weather, the area was great, the parks along the lake are very nice and well kept. The train ride is only 1 mile long but is very scenic.
