Loon Mountain Ski resort in New Hampshire is a great ski destination with varied terrain and many slopes to chose from. They also have a steam railroad! The railroad is a shuttle for skiers from one base lift to another lift. An Orenstein & Koppel 24" gauge steam locomotive is the only power on the railroad. The engine was built in 1934 and came to the U.S.A. for a tourist railroad in New England. The railroad went under and the engine came to Loon. Today the little wood burner makes many fast paced trips a day over the short route carrying tons of skiers back and forth.
I was at Loon on January 1, 2005. I didn't know how much of the railroad I was going to see because I got there late, but the train must have made 10 trips in two hours which is more than enough to photograph the entire line from every angle. The engine really picks up the pace on the short trip and can even give some good stack talk. After I had fun watching the train, I tried the night snow tubing at Loon. Tubing was very fun, and fast. It also makes you wonder how much you value your body as you speed and I mean speed down a mountain on a piece of rubber with your face only inches off the ground!
