Kinzers Shay Railroad

headed back for the station

Background

passing the steam powered craneThe Kinzers Shay railroad is a 30" gauge railroad that runs around the grounds of the Rough & Tumble Engineers' Historical Association. The railroad's only locomotive is the shay - hence the name. The shay was built in the 1970's for a private railroad and eventually found its way to Kinzers. The engine is used during the annual Thesherman festival.

My Visit

at the water towerI was at Kinzers in 2003. The shay was actually the first thing I saw as I was driving toward Kinzers, so I knew it was going to be a good day! The shay runs non-stop all day right up to closing and it is a good way to see the grounds. It is like shooting fish in a barrel to chase the shay because the track is a circle and trains run constantly.
