Huckleberry Railroad

2 headed back to the village

Background

rounding the return loopThe Huckleberry Railroad is part of the Crossroads Village. The village uses 1800's technology to show visitors how everyday tasks were performed and how life was back in the 1800's. The railroad was originally part of the Pere Marquette. The railroad is now narrow gauge and operates on a few miles of track with return loops on each end of the line to turn the entire train. The engine that was operating the day I was there is a Baldwin 4-6-0 built for the Alaska Railway in 1920.

My Visit

rounding the first loop and heading back to the villageI was at the Crossroads village on June 19, 2005. The village was a real step back in time. There is always something going on that shows you how everyday tasks were carried out in the 1800's. The cider mill and saw mill are both powered by steam and interesting to watch. The railroad staff were great, everyone at the village was very helpful and friendly. The line may be only a few miles long but it is very scenic and fun to photograph.

Click here to see the Crossroads village from above on Terraserver. The big circle is the turnaround loop for the trains and the village is to the right. If you follow the winding road just above the railroad, it leads the the railroad shop.
